Installation advice

We think it is relatively easy to install our roof windows as everything can be done from inside the property, however, ease of installation will always depend on your specific circumstances. Before you start the installation, there are a list of things that you need to take into consideration:

  • Are you installing your roof window into a new building?
  • Is this new build without a covered roof and without finished masonry?
  • Is it an established or inhabited house?
  • Does the roof have modern tiles or have you got a 100 year old slate roof?

We have organised these assembly instructions so that you can find exactly the right sections you need for your roof quickly. But should you have any concerns, you should seek the advice and assistance of a professional roofer because incorrect roofing and building work can affect the stability of the roof.

We can also advise you about the way to attach a snow guard to your roof window to avoid possible damage from snow.

Remove the sash once more to continue with the installation. Remember to push in the locking pin on each hinge. Support the weight of the sash underneath whilst dislocating the hinges and carefully place back inside roof.

Cut the waterproof membrane

Cut the waterproof membrane

It is important to ensure the water tightness of a roof window against the elements. It is therefore recommended that a collar of waterproof membrane is placed around the frame. First cut the four strips that will surround the frame.

Loosen batten

Loosen batten

Loosen (or de-nail) the batten underneath the frame to allow for the positioning of the new collar.

Attaching the membrane

Starting with the bottom piece, slide under the batten and staple/tack to the underside of the frame.

When fixing the side pieces, make sure you cut and tightly secure around roof battens.

Fixing the top of the membrane

Fixing the top of the membrane

Fix the top piece of membrane underneath the existing roof membrane. If the roof is counter-battened, it may be necessary to remove a small section of batten in order to slide the cover piece into place.

Cut existing membrane

Lift up the cut piece and fix the top collar piece underneath and to the frame. Replace the existing piece and fix.
